From Baghdad to Ottawa

Dr. Azeez Sadeeqi's journey from Baghdad to Ottawa is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of a supportive community. An international medical graduate (IMG), Dr. Sadeeqi completed his medical education at the University of Baghdad in 2019. Following his graduation, he embarked on a rigorous postgraduate training program, focusing on general practice and participating in various disciplines. His most notable contribution during this period was working with Doctors Without Borders on a COVID-19 ICU project, showcasing his commitment to global health during a critical time.

In pursuit of furthering his career and reuniting with his wife, Dr. Sadeeqi emigrated to Canada. Settling in Ottawa, he undertook observerships in pediatrics and family practice, which provided him with invaluable insights into the Canadian healthcare system. His journey continued as a clinical assistant with medical groups, working alongside family physicians and internal medicine specialists. These experiences enriched his understanding and prepared him for the competitive Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS) process.

Navigating the Challenges of Residency Applications

Dr. Sadeeqi faced many challenges during his residency applications, navigating the highly competitive process where the number of available spots is significantly lower than the number of applicants. Achieving high scores on crucial exams, such as the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE), was a daunting task. Furthermore, the stress of crafting a compelling application with strong letters of recommendation and a well-written personal statement added to the overall pressure.

Interviews, a crucial part of the residency application process, were particularly demanding and unpredictable. Dr. Sadeeqi emphasizes the importance of understanding the CaRMS match algorithm and being prepared for all stages of the application process, from initial preparation to post-interview periods. The need for a robust support system, both personal and professional, was vital in navigating these challenges.

Advice for International Medical Graduates

Dr. Sadeeqi's advice for fellow IMGs aiming to enhance their residency applications includes familiarizing oneself with the process early and reviewing program descriptions on the CaRMS website. Understanding specific program requirements and preparing for exams early, while striving for high scores, are crucial determinants in the application process.

Clinical experience, both in one’s home country and through observerships and rotations in Canada, is essential. Dr. Sadeeqi advises future applicants to gain as much clinical experience as possible and to actively engage with the Canadian healthcare system. Organizational skills, such as keeping track of deadlines and ensuring all application components are completed meticulously, are also vital.

Extracurricular activities, including community service, volunteering, and advocacy work, can significantly bolster an application. Engaging in these activities demonstrates a well-rounded character and a commitment to the community, attributes valued by selection committees.

The Importance of the N4 IEHP Resource Hub

Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Sadeeqi underscores the invaluable support provided by the N4 IEHP Resource Hub. This comprehensive resource center offers guidance and support for internationally educated healthcare professionals (IEHPs), including physicians and nurses. The hub provides detailed pathways to licensure in Canada, breaking down the complex process into manageable steps.

"The N4 IEHP Resource Hub has a lot of resources available for ITPs and IENs. It offers multiple visual pathways to licensure, with clear, visual guides that break down the process into smaller steps. Additionally, the St. Paul University online program has helped me as an IEHP to gain the necessary non-clinical skills for success in Canadian healthcare jobs."

The N4 Resource Hub also offers various programs to help IEHPs develop the clinical skills necessary for success in the Canadian healthcare landscape. For instance, the online program developed by Saint Paul University aids in skill acquisition which Dr. Sadeeqi was part of. The N4/SPU online program for IEHPs, titled "Fostering Canadian Integration for Internationally Educated Health Professionals," launched in September 2022, has proven successful in aiding IEHPs to grasp the Canadian healthcare context, facilitating their journey towards optimal employment. The SPU program follows an integrated development model, emphasizing knowledge, skills, and identity formation. Through activities like peer mentoring, reflective learning journals, and discussion forums, students form a learning community while enhancing their expertise for integration into the Canadian healthcare system.

Dr. Sadeeqi highlights the importance of these resources in helping IEHPs navigate the licensure and residency application processes. By providing clear guidance, support, and opportunities for engagement, the N4 IEHP Resource Hub plays a crucial role in helping internationally trained professionals integrate into the Canadian healthcare system.
