CBC: Federal government aiming to shrink temporary residents' share of population by 2027

Posted on Tuesday, May 07, 2024 09:54 AM

News

Immigration Minister Marc Miller said Thursday the federal government is looking to shrink temporary residents' share of Canada's population over the next three years.

Miller said temporary residents made up 6.2 per cent of Canada's population in 2023 and the government is working to reduce that share to 5 per cent by 2027. That would mean a decrease in the temporary resident population of roughly 19 per cent, he said.

"This is not a historical low, driving it down by 19 per cent, but it is...

Nova Scotia has placed a temporary hold on applications from workers in the food and accommodation sector who are seeking immigration through the Nova Scotia Nominee Program, following overwhelming demand.

The program allows the province to nominate skilled workers to settle as permanent residents in Nova Scotia, but officials said a pause was needed.

In March 2023, the program received 460 applications, compared to 830 applications in March of this year.

Posted on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 12:10 PM

News

Two of the Island's chambers of commerce say the province's plan to reduce immigration is hurting businesses, and has prompted hundreds of foreign workers to leave P.E.I.

The provincial government announced in February it is reducing its nominees for permanent residency by 25 per cent, and will focus on nominating workers in health care, child care and the trades.

The Summerside and Charlottetown chambers of commerce say that leaves many who work in retail and the service sector without a chance...

Immigration Minister Marc Miller confirmed to Radio-Canada that the federal government will be using its penitentiaries to hold some foreign nationals for immigration purposes.

He said those detainees will be separated from the prison population, but that both groups could be sharing services.

"It would be separate housing and it would not be in the general population, because they are not criminals," Miller said, following Radio-Canada's story on the government's proposal buried at the bottom of...
