Bridging Programs

IEHPs may be required to complete a bridging program to address gaps and/or differences in education and competencies to register to practice in Canada and successfully integrate into the Canadian healthcare system. IEHPs should follow the regulators' instructions on which bridging program and courses to take. The following programs are for information only regarding which programs have been recommended by regulators.

CEN Re-Entry/IEN Bridging (NB CRIB) Program
NBCC is committed to the successful delivery of the NB CRIB Program for internationally educated nurses (IENs) and Canadian educated nurses (CENs) seeking re-entry into the profession. The NB CRIB Program is offered in English. The program is approximately 13-months in length and is facilitated through online learning, classroom sessions, lab practice and clinical practicums. Some courses are delivered entirely online, while others have a blended approach (e.g., online and face-to-face classroom sessions).

Newfoundland and Labrador

IEN Bridging/RN Re-entry Program
The IEN Bridging/RN Re-entry Program is offered through the Continuing Nursing Studies department of the Centre for Nursing Studies (CNS). The program prepares IENs to build on the commonalities and differences between their own experiences and Canadian health-care delivery and nursing practice. IENs enroll in the program or identified program courses to enhance knowledge and skills as a means to attain practice equivalence to the Canadian educated and practicing nurse.

Competency-based education programs for Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs)
List of competency-based gap-filler programs and courses the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) recommends for internationally educated applicants in need of further education to meet their learning needs. These programs and courses offer an efficient path towards meeting CNO’s Education Requirement:

Multi-Course Programs (RN)

  • Fanshawe College: Bridging Internationally Educated Nurse Program
  • Conestoga College: Enhanced Practice for Internationally Educated Nurses (For international students applying from overseas only)


Multi-Course Programs (RPN)

  • George-Brown College: Nursing for Internationally Educated Nurses
  • Humber College: Registered Practical Nurse Refresher
  • Niagara College: Gerontology

Prince Edward Island (PEI)

Registered Nurse Bridging / Re-Entry Education Program
The PEI Department of Health and Wellness has partnered with the Nova Scotia Health Authority to deliver the Registered Nurse Professional Development Centre’s (RNPDC) RN Competency Assessment and the RN Bridging/Re-Entry Program. RNPDC has partnered with the Nursing Community Assessment Services (NCAS) to complete all the competency assessments for PEI. This program is approved by the College of Registered Nurses of PEI (CRNPEI) and applicants must be referred by CRNPEI to take the program.

Registered Nursing Bridging Program for Internationally Educated Nurses (RNBP/IEN)
This is an on-line certificate program that the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS) will refer IENs to in order augment IEN credentials. Tuition amounts will vary depending on the number of courses assigned by CRNS.

The Michener Institute of Education at UHN
Bridging Programs for Internationally Educated Health Professionals (IEHPs):

Medical Laboratory Science
This bridging program is designed for internationally educated and experienced medical laboratory technologists whose training and work experience. have been assessed by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) and have been issued a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) Report.

Radiological Technology
This program has been specifically designed to help prepare internationally educated medical radiation technologists whose training and work experience have been assessed by the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMIRTO), and have been issued an Order so they will be better prepared to write the national CAMRT certification examination.
