Immigration Minister Marc Miller says Canada is to raise immigration targets for francophones from other countries hoping to settle in Canada outside of the province of Quebec.

“Ottawa is planning to increase the target for francophone immigration outside of Quebec,” Miller tweeted.

CBC: Immigration minister announces new rules to curb international student fraud

Immigration Minister Marc Miller has announced new rules aimed at protecting international students from fraud, following an investigation this summer into more than 100 cases involving fake admission letters.

The immigration department launched a task force in June to investigate a scheme that dates back to 2017, which saw immigration agents issue fake acceptance letters to get international students into Canada.

Statistics released by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reveal that the number of international students being granted permanent residence is growing.

Figures show 8,565 former international students became permanent residents in 2005, compared to 19,330 in the first three quarters of 2023.

A new report from the auditor general of Canada released Thursday warns that while progress has been made, the federal government must improve its management of immigration programs to reduce permanent residency backlogs.

CBC: Ottawa pinpoints 5 priorities after health ministers meet on P.E.I.

Health ministers from across the country wrapped up two days of meetings in Charlottetown Thursday and their federal counterpart says he is taking five "concrete" priorities home to Ottawa as a result of it.

Federal Health Minister Mark Holland listed those items in a communique after groups representing doctors and nurses demanded the ministers leave the gathering "with a clear commitment to urgent action."
