CBC: Miller to propose more changes to immigration and asylum system

Posted on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 12:19 PM

News

Immigration Minister Marc Miller says further reforms to Canada's immigration and asylum systems will be proposed in the coming weeks.

The federal government recently made a significant cut to the targeted number of permanent residents to be admitted to Canada in the next two years, and tightened the rules on temporary worker permits.

Statistics provided by Canadian officials show the average wait time to process refugee and asylum claims is around 44 months.
Miller told the House of Commons...

Global News: Canada warns claiming asylum is ‘not easy’ with new global ad campaign

Posted on Wednesday, December 04, 2024 11:17 AM

News

Once presenting itself as one of the world’s most welcoming countries to refugees and immigrants, Canada is launching a global online ad campaign cautioning asylum-seekers that making a claim is hard.

The C$250,000 ($178,662) in advertisements will run through March in 11 languages, including Spanish, Urdu, Ukrainian, Hindi and Tamil, the immigration department told Reuters. They are part of a broader shift in tone by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s unpopular government on immigration and an...

CTV News: Canada is pausing private refugee sponsorship applications until 2026

Posted on Monday, December 02, 2024 11:24 AM

News

Canada is pausing private refugee sponsorships from groups of five or more people and community organizations to help clear a backlog of applications.
The notice was published on the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada website today.
The pause is effective immediately and runs until Dec. 31, 2025.

The government says applications received annually far outpace the number of spaces for private refugee sponsorships.

The government has set a target of admitting 23,000 privately sponsored...

CTV News: Canada hints at fast-tracking refugee refusals

Posted on Friday, November 29, 2024 10:16 AM

News

Canada's immigration minister says he plans to propose measures to reform the country's refugee system, potentially fast-tracking refusals of cases deemed to have little chance of succeeding.

Experts and advocates warned that could violate asylum-seekers' right to due process and could be challenged in court.
"I plan to put forward more measures. I want to reform the system. It's not working in the way it should," Immigration Minister Marc Miller told a parliamentary committee on Monday.

CTV News: Deepfake videos appear to target Canadian immigrants for thousands of dollars

Posted on Monday, November 25, 2024 10:14 AM

News

Artificially generated videos of a Toronto-based lawyer asking for money appear to be just one way some try to exploit newcomers to Canada during a time of confusion around new immigration rules.

Two videos sent to immigration lawyer Max Chaudhary appear to be him directly addressing an individual on a first-name basis and even naming his fiance. The problem is that what he's watching is actually a deepfake video created by artificial intelligence (AI).

CBC: New survey finds Canadians are feeling anxious about immigration

Posted on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 12:24 PM

News

Canadians are feeling increasingly uneasy about immigration and its role in generating "economic strain," according to a new survey conducted by the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
Among other things, the survey found that many Canadians believe too much attention is being focused on newcomers and refugees, and that asylum seekers receive too many benefits.
The survey landed two weeks after Ottawa announced dramatic changes to its projected immigration numbers. On Sunday, Prime Minister Justin...

Global News: Trudeau says he could have acted faster on immigration changes, blames ‘bad actors’

Posted on Monday, November 18, 2024 12:39 PM

News

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the federal government could have acted faster on reining in immigration programs, after blaming “bad actors” for gaming the system.

Trudeau released a nearly seven-minute video on YouTube Sunday talking about the recent reduction in permanent residents being admitted to Canada and changes to the temporary foreign worker program.

Over the next two years, the permanent residency stream is being reduced by about 20 per cent to 365,000 in 2027.

CBC: Hundreds of asylum seekers now living in makeshift shelters in Ottawa

Posted on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 12:24 PM

News

After fleeing to Ottawa from Congo last winter, Fanny Mbuyavanga was still left searching for a safe place to rest her head at night.

"I didn't know where to go, where to start," the 23-year-old recalled.

Mbuyavanga arrived in December and initially stayed with friends before ending up at Heron Road Community Centre in July — one of the emergency overflow spaces set up to help manage the crisis facing Ottawa's shelter system.

"I don't like this situation. I don't know what to do. I'm here, I will...

Canada has announced changes to their visitor visa policies, effectively ending the automatic issuance of 10-year multiple-entry visas, according to new rules outlined by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
The IRCC posted an update on the federal government’s website on Nov. 6 claiming that “multiple-entry visas issued to maximum validity are no longer considered to be the standard document.”
Previously, visitors to Canada could be granted multiple-entry visas for up to 10 years, which...
